Dr Martens, or "Docs" as they are affectionately called, were first brought to life by a remarkable German doctor named Klaus Mรคrtens. In 1945, while on leave from World War II, Mรคrtens injured his ankle while skiing. Frustrated with the discomfort and impracticality of standard military boots, he decided to create his own footwear solution.

Mรคrtens designed a boot with an air-cushioned sole to provide superior comfort and support. With the help of a friend, Herbert Funck, a mechanical engineer, he developed a prototype that featured a unique air cushioning system. This innovative design quickly gained attention, catching the eye of British shoe manufacturer R. Griggs Group Ltd.

In April 1960, the first pair of Dr Martens boots was released under the style name "1460." The number represented the actual release date, 1st April 1960. They were an instant hit, favored by factory workers and postmen for their durability and resilience. Little did Mรคrtens know that his revolutionary footwear would soon become a symbol of counterculture and rebellion.
